How Long Can Water Be Stored In A Rainwater Tank?

Rainwater tanks can provide a handy source of water to keep your garden thriving, your car clean or your pool topped up. If you're wondering how long you can store water in your rainwater tank, read on - we've put together this handy guide with everything you need to know.

Longevity Of Rainwater

Rainwater can be kept from anywhere between a week to indefinitely! This will depend, however, on how much care you put into your storage - what materials you use, and how you prevent a build-up of algae or mosquito infiltration.

The Right Materials For The Job

The number-one requirement for rainwater tank material is a substance that won't break down in a hurry and won't emit chemicals into your water supply. Most Australian water tanks are made from high-quality plastic that won't degrade, that's lightweight and easy to install. You might also consider the following materials for your tank installation:

  • Concrete: It's durable and able to neutralise rainwater's acidity.
  • Fibreglass: Fibreglass is a sturdy, lightweight material.
  • Steel: Relatively inexpensive and highly durable, steel's a good option for tanks.

Minimising Contaminants

When it comes to keeping your water as fresh as possible for as long as possible, it's important you do what you can to prevent plant growth and mosquitoes.

Algae can easily flourish in your water tank if it's not well-maintained. A simple way you can prevent growth is to restrict the amount of light that enters your water tank. This can be done by burying your storage system, painting it a black, brown or another dark colour, or putting your storage system in a dark place. You could also consider adding chlorine or iodine to your water to prevent algae growth and eliminate waterborne diseases.

Mosquitoes thrive in wet environments and can quickly contaminate your rainwater if they're allowed to breed. Some people keep these unfriendly visitors at bay by adding a little vegetable oil to their rainwater to coat the surface. As oil floats on water, if you're draining water from the bottom of the tank the oil won't be in the water you use but will instead prevent the mosquitoes from using your tank as a breeding ground.

Above all, remember that each potential contaminant has its own conditions in which it thrives, so never assume one treatment method will work for every sort of problem you might come across.
