How Backflow Prevention Protects You And Your Property

One of the most unpleasant plumbing problems is backflow. A backflow problem isn’t one that you can afford to ignore. It isn’t on the same level as a leaky tap.

If backflow happens you will have to shut down your whole water system. You can’t use your potable water for drinking or anything else, because of the risk of contamination. Added to that is the unpleasant smell, which is doubtful that you can stand for very long.

Fortunately, there is a means to prevent this happening in your home or business. It is simply called
backflow prevention and is a really simple solution. We at Nudge’s Plumbing urge everyone to have this installed and here’s why.

What is Backflow?

For those that haven’t heard the term before, it simply means that the water in your plumbing system is backing up or going in the reverse direction that it should. To stop that happening, you should install backflow prevention.

Two Types of Backflow

One is called back pressure and is the result of higher water pressure within your plumbing system than in your water supply.

The other is called back siphonage, which means the supply of water from outside has lowered for some reason. Your water supply has been interrupted, diverted, or is being drained in some way.

The Risk

The most obvious and prevalent risk is to you and your family’s health. Stagnant and trapped waste is a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. That’s why backflow prevention is recommended.

Backflow Prevention

The simple solution to this possible problem is to install backflow valves. These essentially create an air gap between your potable water and waste water system.

Most building plumbing codes specify the use of them to prevent backflow problems, but older system may not contain them. There are many types, designs, and sizes of backflow preventers to fit every type of system and requirements.

These should be placed at the junction of all cross connections to prevent backflow contaminating clean water.

Don’t Delay

Don’t wait until you have a backflow problem before you think of installing a form of backflow prevention. Here at Nudge’s Plumbing we recommend all house and business owners to take this step if you haven’t already done so.

These offer you and your property added protection against plumbing accidents. Don’t hesitate to
